The workshop explains why and how students can become scientifically literate through the three major scientific processes: inquiry, problem solving, and decision-making. The curriculum is built around scientific inquiry where children ask questions and discover answers through exploration and focused investigations. Students have the opportunity to solve problems in each unit using the design process that incorporates science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). This session will enable teachers to better understand how they can help students achieve these three major science processes identified in the learning outcomes for each unit and see some of the activities and experiments in action. Teachers will also discover how to ask essential questions related to the big ideas of each unit to spark student thinking, encourage future exploration, and make decisions that relate to important issues around the world. Teachers will also explore how to meet the learning outcomes for each lesson and use a variety of ‘assessment for learning’ tools identified in each unit.

Mary Anne’s experience in education spans nearly 40 years with the Ottawa Catholic School Board, as a classroom teacher, Consultant, School Effectiveness Framework System Lead, Vice Principal, Principal, System Principal of Leading & Learning, as well as the founding Principal for a new school that opened its doors in 2015. Mary Anne has also done extensive leadership work with the Catholic Principal’s Council of Ontario as an instructor for the Principal Qualification Program, Leading Student Achievement: District Facilitator and Professional Learning Program Facilitator. This work positively impacted leaders, and aspiring leaders throughout the province of Ontario.

Mary Anne’s passion is curriculum, with a specialty in Early Childhood Education. She had held the role of Part-Time Professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Education since 1984. She is committed to supporting both beginning and experienced teachers as they engage in professional learning to further develop their teaching craft. Through this role, Mary Anne is continually seeking out best practices and cutting edge pedagogies to support her students.

Mary Anne has been awarded the Ottawa Catholic School Board Director of Education Commendation Award for excellence in education in 2008, as well as the Eastern Ontario Staff Development Network Outstanding Achievement award in 2014.

Mary Anne lives in Ottawa, Canada and enjoys gardening, time at her family cottage and hiking with her family.
